The Parable of the Spa (part 4)
Our little saga is about to end. If you’ve been following along, you remember that our spa has gone through a few phases:
1) No power = dead spa
2) Right power + wrong wiring = blown fuse
3) Right wiring + wrong power = no heat
That brings us to where we are now:
4) Right power + right wiring = hot water therapy bliss
The last fix was easy. The electrician was done in less than an hour, and less than five hours after that, the water was back up to the right temperature. I am not a big fan of hot tubs, but I do admit that it is nice having the option to sit in our brand new, ten year old, spa when I want to.
All of us, like our spa, have been created for a purpose (Jeremiah 29:11). God does not waste time, nor does He make mistakes. To fulfill our God-made purpose, it is important to remember a few things:
1) Get connected to God. I don’t know what that means for you. For some it will mean coming to Him for the first time; for others it will mean coming BACK to Him. Either way, His vision and dream for us is impossible until we are first connected to Him.
2) Check the wiring. Again, I’m not sure what this will mean for each of you. For me, as with a lot of pastors I know, it means remembering the Sabbath. God created the Sabbath as a day of rest. Honestly, Sundays are not a day of rest for me, so I rest on a different day. For some people, “checking the wiring” will mean spending time with your spouse and children, spending time alone with God, worshipping, or something else entirely. Rick Warren puts it this way: “Divert daily, withdraw weekly, abandon annually.” If we don’t, then we run the risk of blowing a fuse.
3) We’re not enough. When we switched from 240v to 120v the jets worked, but the water was cold so the spa was pretty much useless. When we stop relying on the power of God and start relying on our own power, we can have a lot of motion, but no real ministry. People are drawn to Jesus Christ by the Father not us. People are convicted of sin by the Holy Spirit, not us.
One thing my little spa saga has taught me: I am going to do all I can with the abilities God has given me, but I’m going to trust Him for the heat and the jets and the healing that comes with both.
