The Parable of the Spa (part 3)
Bet you didn’t know this would end up being a saga, did you? It wasn’t enough that we waited over a year to get our spa hooked up. It wasn’t enough that it drew more amps than the wires would allow which blew a fuse. No no…now our poor little brand new, ten year old spa would be hooked up to a different power supply. It was hooked up to 240v. Now, as a temporary fix since the electrician was going on vacation for a few days, it would be hooked up to 120v. [I think it's 120v. I'm not an electrician. -john] This would make it take longer to heat the water, but it would keep the amperage down when we fired up the jets. Brilliant!
By now the temperature of the water had only dropped about 15 degrees since blowing the fuse, and I figured it would only take a few hours to come back up. So, excited once again at the prospect of using our spa, I went out back to check the temp every hour or so. To my dismay, the temperature was dropping! I could run the jets 24/7 now, but the water was not being heated. Who wants to sit in a hot tub filled with cold water?! The spa was not configured to run correctly on 120v power. We were hooked up to the wrong power supply!
I have a feeling this describes a lot of us. The jets are running, but there’s no heat. We are evangelizing, and serving, and we have great programs, processes, and places, but without heat, what’s the point?
We lose the heat when we disconnect from the correct power supply and plug in to the wrong one: ourselves. If we believe that people are coming to Jesus because of our building, or our ability to sing, play, speak, serve, etc…we’re wrong. Period. No one can come to Jesus unless they are drawn by the Father. God is the one that leads people to Jesus, His Son. Don’t credit for what God is going. Just give Him all the glory for it. Even as devoted followers of Jesus, God’s desire is for us is to hand over the reins of our lives and churches to God and let Him run it all. I love how Perry Noble puts it, “leadership is as easy as listening to God, and then doing what He says.” The same can be said for being a follower of Jesus.
What power supply are you hooked up to? Let’s not forget what Jesus said to the church that got plugged in to the wrong power supply. None of us want to get vomited out.
